Sand Cat (Felis margareta) detail

Illustration & Painting

Peter Warner studied drawing and painting at Wimbledon School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools. He has illustrated over fifty children's and wildlife books, among them five major books about felines, both domestic cats and wild cats, notably The Book of the Cat and Perfect Cats, of which he is also the author. He is also a considerable landscape painter in watercolour, important in the context of wild life illustration.

In his current series of book illustrations with author Marilyn Edwards many drawings are from life, either from the author's cats, or his own.

First hand observation of any subject is the only way to achieve absolute integrity, and in the course of illustrating these books, paper and pencils are located at strategic points throughout the house and the artist's studio ready to capture interesting cat behaviour at any moment.

Peter Warner has also a large zoologically classified reference library of all animals, birds and wildlife, which is particularly strong in the field of mammals, and especially those which have become his life's work, felines and canines - wild cats, domestic cats, and dogs. Of necessity he is an accomplished photographer and is able to draw on thousands of his own images.
